King Albert Museum

The King Albert Museum in Chemnitz is one of the most important historic buildings in Saxony , built in honor of King Albert and his wife Queen Carola . The museum building was erected at the same time as a number of large buildings in Chemnitz such as the opera house , the gas works , the Barberina and the Hotel Carola at the beginning of the 20th century. It is part of the monument ensemble on Theaterplatz , which also includes the Chemnitz Opera House, Petrikirche and the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof. The museum is located in the center of the city on Theaterplatz and on the Street of Nations.

history

The building was designed by Richard Möbius , the construction was carried out by Otto Stäber . The building is characterized by the use of the local building material, the “red granite from Mittweida”, as can be seen, for example, in other representative buildings in Chemnitz.

The museum opened in 1909. During the Second World War , the museum building was badly damaged in 1945. He was in a desperate state even during the fall of the Wall. In 1991/1992 the house was renovated and reopened as the King Albert Museum.

Today the “ Museum am Theaterplatz ” is housed in the building, which is type of an art history museum. It houses parts of the Chemnitz Art Collections , a collection that has been in existence since 1866 with around 65,000 exhibits.
