Richard Möbius (born June 7, 1859 in Hosterwitz near Dresden ; † April 8, 1945 in Arnsdorf ) was a German architect and construction clerk who served as city planning officer in Chemnitz from 1900 to 1925 and shaped the municipal building industry there.

Life

Möbius studied at the Dresden Polytechnic until 1884 and graduated with a diploma. He was then a master builder in Zwickau and Dresden before he was appointed to the Chemnitz City Planning Council in 1900.

In 1900 the Chemnitz city building department was divided into two separate offices. City planning officer Eduard Hechler , who headed the office since 1880, remained responsible for civil engineering and the technical operations of the municipality until his retirement in 1909. The newly created building construction department was transferred to Richard Möbius, who came from Dresden, and who retained the function until 1925.

In the 25 years he worked in Chemnitz, the city developed rapidly. The first school building that was erected under Möbius' responsibility was the West School on the Kaßberg . It was built in 1902/1903 as the second girls 'middle school, but later converted into a girls' higher school.

Under his direction, the New City Theater (opera house since 1925) and the King Albert Museum (today art collections ) were built on today's Theaterplatz from 1906 to 1909 . The festive inauguration of both buildings took place in the presence of King Friedrich August III. on September 1, 1909. Around the same time (1907–1911) the new Chemnitz town hall was built , which was also built under his direction.

As a result of the First World War, public and private construction largely came to a standstill and only started again around 1925 - when he retired. Fred Otto was his successor .

Richard Möbius was married twice and had five children. One of the four sons from the first marriage was the writer Martin Richard Möbius (1892 - around 1952), who also published on architecture (including in the series Neue Werkkunst ).
