The Stuttgart-Münster railway viaduct is the railway bridge of the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim-Kornwestheim freight bypass line across the Neckar valley between Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and Stuttgart-Münster in the immediate vicinity of the Stuttgart-Münster power plant .
The 855-meter-long bridge over the Neckar had already been put into operation in 1896 as the King Wilhelm Viaduct as an iron framework construction on brick pillars. It was named after Wilhelm II. It was the largest and most powerful steel truss bridge in the Kingdom of Württemberg at the time . Shortly before the end of the Second World War , it was blown up and put back into operation in 1954.
From December 12, 1984, the previous viaduct was replaced by a reinforced concrete structure at a neighboring point . At a height of 30 meters, the new bridge crosses the Neckar as well as the U14 line of the Stuttgart city railway and the disused Münster – Cannstatt industrial line . The last train over the old König-Wilhelm-Viadukt ran on February 10, 1990.
On the left side of the Neckar, the Neckartalstraße runs under the viaduct; here are the two stops Kraftwerk Münster and Münster Viaduct of the U14. On the right bank of the river, the viaduct separates a residential and a commercial area; Finally, about 400 meters from the Neckar, it still crosses the U2 and U19 urban railway between the stops (Bad Cannstatt) -Kursaal and Gnesener Straße.
An original pillar of the old King Wilhelm Viaduct has been preserved and has been approved as an artificial climbing facility. The Stuttgart section of the German Alpine Club has taken on the technical support for sport climbing .
