The Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie ( Arabic الدرك الملكي المغربي, DMG ad-darak al-malakī al-maġribī , French Gendarmerie royale marocaine ) is a police unit in Morocco . It is part of the Moroccan armed forces and therefore, unlike the other Moroccan police forces, does not report to the Ministry of the Interior but directly to the king .

organization

The structure of the gendarmerie is very similar to the French national gendarmerie . Like the latter, it takes on police duties in rural areas, while the Moroccan “Sûreté Nationale” is responsible for the cities. Both guard bodies are independent of each other. The gendarmerie has around 24,000 members (2012) and consists of a brigade , four mobile groups and a paratrooper squadron .

A similar organization of security services can be found, for example, in Spain ( Guardia Civil ) and Italy ( Carabinieri ) or France.
