VW Caddy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

VW Caddy is the name for several commercial vehicle and passenger car models from the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand of the Volkswagen Group .

Model history

The first generation (14D) of the Caddy was a pick-up based on the VW Golf I (VW Rabbit) , which was originally designed for the North American market. It was presented in 1978 and built from 1979 to 2007.

The second generation panel van version (9KV) was based on the Seat Inca . It differed from this only in the changed front mask and was produced from the end of 1995 to mid-2003. At the same time, the Škoda pick-up was offered as a VW Caddy (9U) from mid-1996 to the end of 2000 .

At the end of 2003 the VW Caddy (2K) based on the VW Touran I came onto the market. In 2010 and 2015 it got a more extensive facelift. VW describes the 2015 facelift as the fourth generation.

The VW Caddy V was presented in February 2020 . In contrast to the two previous generations, the Caddy V is no longer based on the PQ-35 platform like the Golf V or Touran I (albeit with a rigid axle at the rear), but on the MQB evo like the VW Golf VIII .

particularities

During its construction period, the Caddy was based on very different models from various VW group brands. So the first generation built on the Golf. The 9U and 9KV models, however, are based on Škoda and Seat models. With the Caddy (2K) they returned to the Golf as a base.

Another special feature is the fact that the Caddy (9U) was designed on the basis of the Škoda Favorit / Felicia. This was developed before the takeover of Škoda by VW, so the VW Caddy (9U) is not based on any VW platform .

Surname

The Caddy (14D) was originally marketed as the "VW Rabbit Pickup". With the introduction of the model in Europe, the name was changed to Caddy . In the USA, a caddy is a Cadillac .

Manufacturing plants

  • The Caddy (14D) was built from 1979 to 1993 at the VW plant in Westmoreland ( Pennsylvania , USA ). To enter the European market, another production facility was set up at TAS in Sarajevo , but this had to be stopped in 1992 because of the Bosnian War . This model was also built parallel to the Golf I in South Africa until 2007 .
  • The Caddy (9KV) rolled off the assembly line in Martorell ( Spain ) together with its sister model Seat Inca .
  • The 9U model was produced parallel to the Skoda Pickup at Škoda Auto in Kvasiny ( Czech Republic ).
  • All caddies of the current generation 2K are built in VW's Polish plant in Poznan .
