Ciergnon Castle

The Royal Castle of Ciergnon (in Dutch: Koninklijk kasteel van Ciergnon; in French: Château Royal de Ciergnon) is the summer residence of the Belgian royal family and King Albert II. It is located in Ciergnon in the municipality of Houyet in the province of Namur . The castle is one of the properties made available to the king by the civil list .

history

The castle and the adjoining lands were acquired by King Leopold I in 1840 to build a hunting lodge. Under King Leopold II (King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909), the castle, which still exists today , was built according to plans by the architect Alphonse Balat ; Since then it has served as the summer residence of the King of the Belgians and has already been the site of important events in the Belgian monarchy and politics on several occasions:

  • 1960: Public presentation of the bride of King Baldwin I and future Queen Fabiola de Mora y Aragón .
  • 2001: Baptism of Princess Elisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène.
  • 2003: Baptism of Prince Gabriel Baudouin Charles Marie.
  • 2005: Baptism of Prince Emmanuel Léopold Guillaume François Marie.
  • 2008: Baptism of Princess Eléonore Fabiola Victoria Anne Marie.
  • 2011: At the end of November, during the government crisis in 2011, government formers Elio Di Rupo notified the king who was staying at Ciergnon Castle that he was resigning.
