Kingdom of Garo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kingdom of Garo (also known by the name of its royal family, Bosha ) was a Sidama kingdom on the edge of the Gibe region in Ethiopia .

Garo had clearly defined borders: in the north by Janjero , in the east by the Omo River and in the south by the Gojeb , which separated the kingdom from Kaffa . In the absence of a clear boundary in the west, the subjects of the kingdom had built a series of moats and gates to protect themselves from attacks by the Oromo from the kingdom of Jimma .

Werner Lange discusses the possibility that Garo was a subordinate part of Ennarea - just as Ennarea was part of the kingdom of Damot . With the reign of Yeshaq I. Garo had split off from Ennarea and was a state dependent on Ethiopia. It may be the "Bosge" mentioned in Zorzi's travel diaries. In the 16th century , the emperor Sarsa Denge convinced the king to willingly embrace Christianity . By the 17th century, Ethiopia had lost all contact with this state. Its history in this century is largely in the dark. However, it can be assumed that the migration of the Oromo to the Gibe region continued to constrict the Bosha Kingdom until, at the end of the century, only a relatively small isolated area in the high forest of May Gudo was left.

Garo remained independent until Abba Gomo from Jimma conquered the last isolated parts of this empire. When the Abyssinian Emperor Haile Selassie annexed Jimma, a descendant of Dagoye , the last king of Garos, lived as good as exiled in Jiren .
