The Königsberg Sanatorium was a tuberculosis hospital on the Königsberg between Goslar and the Granetalsperre . Today only ruins are left of the complex .

history

The sanatorium was the first sanatorium ever to be founded by a German social insurance company. At the time it was founded in 1895 by the Hanover State Insurance Company, there were only private sanatoriums in Germany and those with charitable sponsors. By 1915, numerous buildings and agricultural annexes were added for own livestock farming.

In the 1950s, the pulmonary hospital was more like a spa hotel than a hospital - including cultural events, film screenings, lectures, board games and church services. However, with the decline in TB cases in 1970, the sanatorium came to an end, as the operation was no longer profitable due to a lack of capacity.

After four years of vacancy, the Cornelius Helferich Foundation took over the facility in 1974 to turn it into a treatment and nursing home for mentally handicapped children. In 1984 the home had to be closed again due to non-compliance with the state social welfare office; the poor structural conditions were considered to be the main cause. Just two weeks after the last children had been moved, the main house was set on fire by strangers and badly damaged; further use as a home was unthinkable. Since then, the numerous buildings stood empty and fell into disrepair.

In 1997 there was another change of ownership. The new owner intended to use the 50,000 m² site for tourism, but for a long time nothing happened. It was not until ten years later, in 2007, that efforts were intensified again and usage concepts for a holiday home area were presented to the public.

Current condition

On the night of June 24th to 25th, 2009, a fire destroyed the main building and its extensions. The fire brigade had the buildings burned down to the foundations in a controlled manner and the ruins torn down the following day for safety reasons. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the police assume it was arson. The search for the perpetrator has since been officially discontinued after no evidence of two suspects was found.

In December 2009, the Harz waterworks finally refused to use the site for tourism because of the close proximity to the Grane Dam ( water protection zone II), whereupon the investor turned to other projects. Any subsequent use of the site for tourist purposes has therefore become a long way off.

Since October 2010, the property, all buildings and the rubble have been used as a training area for rescue dogs . First by the rescue dog squadron Osterode, Goslar, Harz eV of the Federal Association of Rescue Dogs , and since 2012 by the BzRH rescue dog squadron 1.RHV Goslar - Harz and Braunschweiger Land. Entry by strangers is therefore no longer possible.

Another fire broke out on April 7, 2015. Due to the danger of collapse, the fire could almost only be fought from outside. The area around the former sanatorium should therefore be cordoned off over a large area.
