The Königstuhl Tunnel , also known as the Königstuhl Tunnel , is a 2,487 m long railway tunnel on the Neckar Valley Railway in Heidelberg between the Heidelberg-Weststadt / Südstadt section of the Heidelberg Hbf station and the Karlstorbahnhof (since 2008 Heidelberg-Altstadt). The tunnel, begun in 1908, was built shortly before the First World War as a link to the new Heidelberg Central Station, which is currently under construction. However, as its completion was delayed considerably, it was initially used for almost 40 years only for freight traffic and to connect the Heidelberg marshalling yard. At the same time as Theodor Heuss reopened the main station on May 8, 1955, the tunnel was officially opened to passenger traffic. This replaced the old route via the Gaisberg, Spital and Schlossberg tunnels. Today a road follows the old course.

During track renewals in autumn 2013 there was an accident in which an excavator damaged a tunnel column. The repair delayed construction work. Since the beginning of 2017, the entire tunnel has been extensively renovated for 28 million euros.
