The Heidelberg-Altstadt Bahnhof (as Karlstorbahnhof called) is a station on the eastern edge of the old town of Heidelberg . Until December 13, 2008, the Heidelberg station was called Karlstor .
Reception building
The original station building was erected opposite the Karlstor during the construction of the Neckar Valley Railway in 1872 and 1873 . The current building is the result of a renovation between 1934 and 1936. The building is a listed building.
In 1983 it was converted into a municipal office building for 2.5 million German marks, and since 1995 it has housed the Karlstorbahnhof cultural center , for which Mayor Beate Weber campaigned. With a broad program of cinema screenings, concerts and readings as well as exhibitions and smaller festivals, it is an elementary part of Heidelberg's cultural landscape.

Since 2004, the station has been a stop in the RheinNeckar S-Bahn network , for which a new platform system was built next to the former reception building. With the 2008/2009 timetable change on December 14, 2008, the station was given its current name, Heidelberg-Altstadt .
