history

The gate, which is on the land side of the town on the Strelasund , was first mentioned in 1281. At that time it was a simple tower structure in the city wall, next to which a gate closer lived in a separate house. He had to control the carts entering the city and to close the gate immediately in the dark or when danger was approaching.

In 1446 the Kütertor was rebuilt taking into account the existing structure. The gatehouse served as a prison until 1862, after renovation work it housed living quarters for a long time. From 1963 to 2003 the Kütertor was part of a youth hostel alongside the water art and the water tower . After that it stood empty for a few years.

In the years 2012 to 2015 the Kütertor and the adjoining buildings (including water art, Mauerhaus, water tower and three new buildings) were converted into a residential area, under the name Areal am Kütertor . As of June 2013, the work was well advanced, but the planned completion by the end of the year was delayed. Work finally continued in spring 2015.

The Kütertor stands in the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar . It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund together with the entire city fortifications with the number 718.
