The Heilgeiststraße in the urban area Old Town in Stralsund connects the streets Knieperwall and on Kütertor with the road at the fish market and on Long channel . The Mönchstraße , Ossenreyerstraße , Jacobi Choir road and waterway cruising the Heilgeiststraße. The Mill Road , the road Bielkenhagen that small Schmiedstraße , filter road , Jacobi Choir street and Badstüberstraße go on the Heilgeiststraße. Heilgeiststraße is one of the oldest and longest streets in Stralsund and is part of the core area of ​​the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Historic Old Towns of Stralsund and Wismar .

The street got its name after the Heilgeisthospital , which was mentioned here at the eastern end of the street around the year 1256; at that time it consisted of three or four stalls and a chapel and was later relocated near the Frankentor .

"Heilgeiststraße" has been the name of the entire street since 1869, until then the street was divided into sections: The section between the Kütertor and Mönchstraße was initially called Palmentierstraße , which can be traced back to the word parchment ; Parchment makers in Stralsund were first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The section between Mönchstrasse and Wasserstrasse was called Heilgeiststrasse.

One of the buildings on Heilgeiststrasse is the St. Jakobi Church , a former parish church. The Kütertor is one of the last two remaining city gates in Stralsund, the "Heilgeisttor" at the other end of the street was demolished in 1853.

During the bombing raid on Stralsund on October 6, 1944 , numerous buildings in Heilgeiststrasse were also damaged or destroyed. The buildings numbered 32 to 37 are among the destroyed houses; Until 1944 there was a palace built between 1660 and 1664 , the “Wrangelsche Palais” , whose architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder was commissioned by Carl Gustav Wrangel . The gabled house No. 26 on the corner of Filterstrasse, which had housed the council pharmacy, was also destroyed. Today there is a Peek & Cloppenburg department store here .

The Stralsund tram ran through Heilgeiststrasse until August 1, 1960 .

The intersection with Ossenreyerstrasse is called "Ostkreuz".
