The waterway in the old town in Stralsund connects the Fährwall and the Fährstraße with the Frankenwall and the Frankendamm . The Semlower road that Badenstraße and the long road cross the waterway; the Heilgeiststrasse , the street Am Langenkanal , the Frankenstrasse and the street bei der Heilgeistkirche branch off from the waterway. The waterway is part of the core area of ​​the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

The street runs along the former Stralsund city wall towards the harbor. In 1858 it was given its current name along its entire length. Until then, the section between Fährstraße and Semlower Straße was called Auserm Fähror , between Semlower Straße and Badenstraße outside of Semlower Tor , between Badenstraße and Heilgeiststraße outside of Badentor , between Heilgeiststraße and Langenstraße outside of the Heilgeistor , between Langenstraße and Frankenstraße outside of Langentor and between Frankenstraße and Frankenwall outside of Frankentor , each named after the adjacent city gate.

The house at Wasserstraße 78 was demolished after 1999.

The city ​​scales border the waterway and the portal of the Heilgeistkirche faces the street. The Zeeck department store was located in Wasserstraße and was badly damaged in the bombing raid on Stralsund on October 6, 1944 . Five of the six city gates along the street were demolished in the 19th century, the Semlower Tor , which was badly damaged in the bombing in 1944, was the last remaining gate to be blown up on June 29, 1960.

The Stralsund tram ran through the waterway on the section between Heilgeiststraße and Frankendamm from 1900 until it was shut down in 1966 .
