The Fährstraße in the old town in Stralsund connects Külpstraße at the Alter Markt with the street Am Fischmarkt and the traffic route An der Fährbrücke at the harbor. The street is one of the oldest in the city and is part of the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar . It runs in a west-east direction with two slight kinks.

History, description

The Fährstraße was first named in a document in 1270, around 1290 it is mentioned as Fuhrleutestraße . It was named after the ferry docks at the port .

At the corner of the waterway and the ferry wall was the inner ferry gate , which was demolished in 1874; in front of it was the outer ferry gate at the height of today's ferry bridge .

21 of the buildings in Fährstraße are under monument protection (see also list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), these are:

Number 1 , number 2 , number 6 a , number 7 , number 8/10 , number 11 , number 14/15 , number 17 (Hafenkneipe Zur Fähre ), number 18 , number 19 , number 20/21 , number 22 , number 23 ( Scheelehaus ), number 24 , number 25 , number 26 , number 27 , number 28 , FNumber 29/30 , number 31 and number 32 . In addition, the facade and the front door of the house at Fährstraße 12 and a memorial stone in front of the house at Fährstraße 21 are listed as a monument.

The chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele was born in the house at Fährstraße 23 in 1742 . In 1809, the Prussian officer Ferdinand von Schill was killed in battle in front of the house at Fährstraße 21 . This is indicated by a granite slab on the sidewalk with a gold inscription. Heinrich Kruse was born on December 15, 1815 in the house at Fährstraße 25 .

The road surface is kept in the historical, small-scale paving design .

The fountain shown in the info box with three roughly life-size women, a fountain bowl made from a boulder and a historicizing drinking water fountain is also called the talkative women by the locals . The work of art installed in 2003 was designed by the sculptor Günter Kaden .
