The house at Fährstraße 23 in Stralsund (2012)

The building with the postal address Fährstraße 23 , also called Scheelehaus , is a listed building on Fährstraße in Stralsund . Together with the neighboring house at Fährstrasse 24 , it forms a single unit.

The four-storey house with gable ends was built as a hallway in the 14th century . In the 17th century it was redesigned; in this version it can be seen today. In the 19th century it was redesigned again. During the extensive renovation between 1980 and 1983, it was brought to the facade version of the 17th century.

The facade is characterized by a central arched portal with a flanking rectangular window each and three rectangular windows on the first floor. The second and third floors as well as the stepped, curved gable have segment-arched hatches .

A plaque in the building's hallway indicates that Carl Wilhelm Scheele was born and spent his childhood in this house . After a renovation in the 1980s, the Kulturbund of the GDR had its headquarters here, later the culture department of the city council. Parts of the house have been vacant since 2004. The large Scheele Hall was used regularly by associations such as the “Kulturbund” and the “Filmclub Blendwerk”.

Both buildings were in need of renovation until 2010. They were owned by the city of Stralsund, as a sale had failed due to the high renovation costs. As an interim solution, the rooms were used for an exhibition of models of Stralsund's buildings. In March 2010 Joachim Siemers, head of the Altonaer Kistenfabrik Adolf Siemers, acquired the building for 90,000 euros ; The costs for renovation errors from the 1980s were deducted from the purchase price of 1.6 million euros. He had the houses renovated and opened restaurants and the Hotel Scheelehof on the premises . Scheelebau GmbH was founded in 2010 to renovate the houses and filed for insolvency during the renovation in 2011 ; In December 2016 a lawsuit was opened against Klaus Zickenheiner (Managing Director Scheelebau GmbH) and Joachim Siemers (among other things because of the delay in bankruptcy).

The house is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”. It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund with the number 174.
