Bielkenhagen (Stralsund)

The street Bielkenhagen in the city area Altstadt in Stralsund connects the Mühlenstraße and Heilgeiststraße near the Kütertor with the Mönchstraße near the confluence of the Böttcherstraße . Bielkenhagen is part of the core area of ​​the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

The name of the street goes back to a citizen named Bileko who lived around 1300 and owned some land on the street. The street name is first mentioned in a document in 1310; the component "-hagen" means border . The section between Mönchstrasse and the courthouse was initially called Im Sieben Thören or Siebentlisten (first documented around 1554).

Four of the buildings in the street are under monument protection (see also list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), namely the houses Bielkenhagen 5 (Logenhaus), Bielkenhagen 7 (former city prison), Bielkenhagen 8 (former court prison ) and Bielkenhagen 9 (courthouse).

The buildings on Heilgeiststrasse also include the former Katharinenkirche of the Katharinenkloster , which houses the German Maritime Museum .
