Kleinschmiedstrasse (Stralsund)
The small Schmiedstraße in Stralsund connects the Baden street near the St. Nicholas Church and the Stralsund town hall with the Heilgeiststraße . It belongs to the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage with the title Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .
The street was first mentioned in a document in 1321. Its name goes back to the blacksmiths called small forges , which, in contrast to the blacksmiths, mostly carried out small-scale, filigree work; Small blacksmiths included locksmiths , nail smiths, and knife and blade smiths .
Today's house numbers were assigned in the 19th century. Many buildings on Kleinschmiedstrasse were destroyed in the crash and subsequent explosion of a US warplane ( Consolidated B-24 ) on June 20, 1944 in the properties at Kleinschmiedstrasse 16 and 17. The gap was not closed for a long time, and other, ailing buildings on this side of the street were demolished in the GDR . The open space between Kleinschmiedstrasse, Badenstrasse, Ossenreyerstrasse and Heilgeiststrasse, called Rathausplatz , was used for a long time as a playground and recreational area. After 2010, the square, known as Quartier 17 , was rebuilt.
In the street two buildings are under monument protection , see also the list of monuments in Stralsund . These are the buildings at Kleinschmiedstrasse 20 and Kleinschmiedstrasse 22 .
