The Knieperwall in the old town in Stralsund connects Olof-Palme-Platz , where Knieperdamm , Knieperstraße and Fährwall meet, with the intersection of the streets Katharinenberg , Tribseer Straße , Marienstraße , Tribseer Damm and Frankenwall . Mönchstrasse and Heilgeiststrasse branch off from Knieperwall . At the level of the Kütertores , a dam dividing the Knieperteich for pedestrians and cyclists leads over the “White Bridges” to Jungfernstieg . The Knierperwall is part of the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

The street leading west along the old town island was built in the early 1880s. The Knieperwall got its name from the fortress wall that was part of the Stralsund city fortifications along the city wall. The moat between Kütertor and the Hospitaler Bastion at the level of Mönchstrasse had already been filled in in 1862. After the fortress status of Stralsund was lifted in 1873, there were demands from the population to make the ramparts accessible. According to plans by Ferdinand Jühlke , the redesign of the ramparts began to form a promenade with a playground and a park-like redesign of the Hospitaler Bastion at Knieperteich. Trees were planted; some of these are still available today.

The Knieperwall was later opened to traffic.

Six of the houses along the Knieperwall are under monument protection (see also the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), namely the houses Knieperwall 1 ("Beghinenhaus"), Knieperwall 1 a (former Stralsund playing card factory ), Knieperwall 14 , Knieperwall 15 ("community house") , as well as two buildings belonging to the city fortifications without a number.

The German Maritime Museum , located in the former Katharinenkloster , directly behind the city wall, advertises on Knieperwall with a whale skeleton in a glass showcase above the city wall.
