The Olof-Palme-Platz in the old town in Stralsund connects the Knieperdamm , Sarnowstraße , Knieperstraße and the Fährwall . It is part of the core area of ​​the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

After the assassination of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986, part of Sarnowstrasse and the square on which the Stralsund Theater stands were renamed in his honor on March 15, 1986 ; more than 15,000 visitors came to the memorial event. In 1984, Olof Palme and Erich Honecker paid a visit to the city of Stralsund.

Until 1986, the section of road between Warmbad at the level of Knieperdamm and Kniepertor belonged to Sarnowstraße, before that until the 1890s it belonged to Knieperstraße. The area was only built on in 1882, until then it was part of the Stralsund city fortifications . This is where the “Äussere Kniepertor”, erected by the Prussians in 1815 and demolished in 1874 after it was demolished.

Five of the houses on Olof-Palme-Platz are under monument protection (see also list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), namely the houses Olof-Palme-Platz 1 , Olof-Palme-Platz 2 , Olof-Palme-Platz 3 , Olof-Palme -Platz 5 ("Warmbad") and Olof-Palme-Platz 6 (Stralsund Theater).

The Stralsund tram drove through the street section until it was closed in 1966 . In 1987 the Olof Palme Peace March started here .
