K-Meleon is a free web browser for Windows based on the Gecko engine . The last version appeared in 2015. The development was stopped in 2016.
history
K-Meleon was released under the GNU General Public License . The first version (0.1) appeared in August 2000 as an attempt to integrate winEmbed, the Mozilla Gecko test engine, into Windows. Version 1.0 of the program was released on July 15, 2006, based on Mozilla 1.8.0.5 (Gecko / 20060706); the long current version 1.5.4 is based on the Gecko engine 1.8.1.24. After that, there were stable K-Meleon 1.6 beta versions based on the Gecko engine 1.9.1.x and also stable K Meleon 1.7 alpha versions based on the Gecko engine 1.9.2.x.
The long-term current release version appeared in 2010. The further development has since slowed down because Mozilla removed the MFC embedding code for the Gecko rendering engine from the sources and no longer maintains it.
Since December 2013, K-Meleon has therefore been building on a XULRunner runtime environment and version 74.0 was released on September 27, 2014.

The advantage of K-Meleon over XUL -based browsers such as B. Firefox is the use of the native Windows interface, which makes it much more resource-efficient, which is especially noticeable on slow systems.
K-Meleon can be changed in appearance using skins . Most of the menu navigation and operation can be freely configured using macros. They are defined in K-Meleon's own macro language in macros.cfg and displayed by menus.cfg .
The user interface is also available in German. Up to version 0.9 the files for the German language could be downloaded from the K-Meleon homepage, from version 1.0 the official installation file with German language support is available on SourceForge . Since K-Meleon is based on Mozilla Gecko, the program supports all Mozilla plugins.
Other functions include a pop-up blocker , operation using mouse gestures , a built-in feed reader , the parallel use of Internet Explorer favorites, Opera bookmarks and Mozilla bookmarks as well as a possibility to suppress the display of advertisements. The program can be downloaded with the installer or as a standalone version.
K-Meleon uses the KMeleonWiki as a help, website and download system.
development
The goal of K-Meleon is to be the fastest, maximally configurable and user-friendly web browser possible . It is only programmed for Windows; porting to other systems is not planned; in connection with Wine the program also runs under Linux .
K-Meleon has a small developer community (at times it was only one person in their spare time); so the browser was not always updated as often as it would have been desirable to address all of the security problems that had crept into the Gecko engine. From April 1, 2005, all Mozilla Gecko engine updates will be available as K-Meleon updates via the K-Meleon user forum. To update the Gecko engine used by K-Meleon yourself, a simple guide was written. Most 0.9 versions use the Mozilla Gecko engine 1.7.x - later (1.x) the SeaMonkey Gecko engine 1.8.x. Alternatively, you can find finished builds and pre-release versions (RC) in the K-Meleon forum. German questions are currently being answered there (as of 2017).
