Decoration of Honor for Science and Art

The honorary badge for art and science , also called Litteris et Artibus , was donated on August 18, 1887 by Franz Joseph I as Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary in agreement with both Prime Ministers. It replaced that already in 1835 by Emperor I. Ferdinand donated k. and k. gold medal for art and science which, unlike the badge of honor, was not wearable.

Order decoration

The medal is a highly oval medal made of gold and enclosed by a laurel wreath that is partially enamelled in black . An imperial crown is attached between the medal and the ring . The medal shows the rightly turned bust of the founder in the regalia of the Order of the Golden Fleece with the inscription FRANC JOS I AVSTR-IMP REX BOH ETC ET HVNG REX AP (Franz Joseph I. Kaiser of Austria, King of Bohemia and Hungary). On the reverse, the three-line inscription LITTERIS ET ARTIBVS is surrounded by a laurel wreath open at the top , similar to that found on today's Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art .

Carrying method

The award was worn as a neck decoration on a red ribbon, by women on a bow on the right breast.

owner

The award could be given to nationals and foreigners, although the number of living owners was limited to forty since March 1899. A total of 95 awards to residents and 25 to foreigners can be documented. Queen Elisabeth of Romania , who worked as a writer under the pseudonym "Carmen Sylva" , received the medal on September 28, 1896 in a special version with diamonds . For information on other owners, see the list of holders of the Austrian Badge of Honor and the Austrian Crosses of Honor for Science and Art .

After the borrower died, the heirs were obliged to return the decoration.
