The Styrian Hospital Gesellschaft mbH (KAGes) since 1985, the organizational merger of the regional hospitals of Styria , since 2013, the country's nursing homes.

task

The Steiermärkische Krankenanstaltengesellschaft is not profit-oriented and is responsible for the establishment and operation of the state hospitals and nursing centers. In the area of university clinics, there is a cooperation with the Medical University of Graz . The company employs over 16,000 people, making it the largest employer in Styria.

Legal Status

On January 1, 1985, the KAGes took over the state hospitals from the state of Styria. The company is 100 percent owned by the country. The seat is in the Grazer Stiftingtalstraße directly next to the premises of the LKH Graz .

Hospitals

After a number of hospital associations merged to form a LKH, there were 17 regional hospitals from 2013 to 2014. In 2015 four more hospitals were merged into two associations.

  • LKH Bad Radkersburg
  • LKH Feldbach-Fürstenfeld, formerly LKH Feldbach and LKH Fürstenfeld
  • LKH University Hospital Graz
  • LKH Graz II
  • LKH Hartberg
  • LKH Hochsteiermark (Bruck and Leoben)
  • LKH Judenburg-Knittelfeld, formerly LKH Judenburg and LKH Knittelfeld
  • LKH Mürzzuschlag-Mariazell, formerly LKH Mürzzuschlag and LKH Mariazell
  • LKH Rottenmann-Bad Aussee, formerly LKH Rottenmann and LKH Bad Aussee
  • LKH Stolzalpe ( Murau ), formerly a children's home for tuberculosis, then LSKH for orthopedics
  • LKH Weststeiermark with the locations Deutschlandsberg and Voitsberg
  • LKH Wagna ( Leibnitz )
  • LKH Weiz

The hospital association of the LKH Feldbach and Fürstenfeld was formed on January 1st, 2012. A year later, however, the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld was created , so that there are now divided LKHs across district boundaries despite the district reform.

Nursing homes

In 2013 the four care centers (LPZ) were also handed over to the KAGes. Together with the Landespflegeheim (LPH) Schwanberg five houses are now managed.

  • LPZ Bad Radkersburg
  • LPZ Kindberg
  • LPZ Knittelfeld
  • LPZ Mautern
  • LPH Schwanberg

education

The KAGes operates an academy that offers courses for advanced training in the health and social sectors. However, this academy of the Steiermärkische Krankenanstaltengesellschaft (ASK) does not offer any training opportunities for health professions. The schools for health and nursing and the school for the medical-technical specialist service are still under direct state administration.

Controversy

Closure of maternity wards

In 2011 and 2012, the KAGes closed the maternity wards of three LKH as part of a hospital reform, which led to protests.

  • End of 2011 LKH Bruck
  • June 2012 LKH Wagna
  • End of 2012 LKH Voitsberg

When a Voitsberger baby died on the long journey to the LKH Deutschlandsberg in February 2014, the political decision to close it was blamed for it.

Merger of the LKH Graz-West

In 2012–2013, Regional Councilor Kristina Edlinger-Ploder planned to merge the LKH Graz-West with the neighboring hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder Graz-Eggenberg , whereby the management of the new house and the staff from the KAGes should have changed to the order. This failed due to the resistance of the employees and the population.

Nursing recourse

On August 1, 2011, the state government reintroduced the nursing regress . Children and parents of residents in nursing homes had to make a contribution to care depending on their net income if the income (earnings, pension and care allowance) or assets of the person being cared for were insufficient to finance the home stay. These clawbacks ranged from 4 to 10 percent of children's income and 9 to 15 percent for parents. This procedure, which is unique in Austria, was intended to relieve the state budget and met with broad rejection. However, the regulation was confirmed by the highest court. However, this affected all nursing homes that were financed by the state, not just those of the KAGes. The recourse was abolished in July 2014.

Termination of pregnancy

After years of no political will that the state's own hospitals also carry out abortions , it took until April 2005 when the Salzburg governor, Gabi Burgstaller, set up an abortion clinic at the Salzburg Regional Hospital . As a result, the state of Styria also made this intervention possible at the LKH Graz. Until then, this was only possible at private institutions.
