The KAI Surion is an 8-ton class military helicopter . The multi-purpose helicopter is a joint development by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Eurocopter as part of the Korean Utility Helicopter Program (dt. Korean Utility Helicopter) . It was presented to the public for the first time on July 31, 2009; the first flight of the prototype took place on March 10, 2010.
aims
The helicopter is to replace older models such as the UH-1 and the MD 500 of the Korean armed forces and also serve as the technical basis for a whole range of other in-house developments of the Korean helicopter program KPH, according to the plan.
Program partnership
It is within the KHP (Korean Helicopter Program to German Korean helicopter program developed) KAI with the support of Eurocopter and 17 other South Korean and 11 foreign companies. Eurocopter was selected as a partner by the South Korean government in 2005 and the contract was signed on June 26, 2006. The program started in 2006 and on July 31, 2009 the first prototype was completed at KAI's South Korean plant in Dingon . From 2011, 245 pieces will be delivered to the South Korean army at a price of around 32 million US dollars each.
Exports
In 2007, it was agreed in a memorandum of understanding for the export market (a joint company venture joint to start), 51% and Eurocopter will hold 49% stake in KAI. This will be responsible for the marketing and export of the helicopter to other countries.
Technical specifications
The Surion is equipped with a non-retractable landing gear and will have a FLIR . The external appearance is strongly reminiscent of the Super Puma from Eurocopter. In addition to technical support, the European partner also provides the gearbox, rotor mast and autopilot . Two 1800 kW turbine shaft drives with FADEC serve as the drive .
