KOI8

KOI8 is a family of 8-bit character sets for the Cyrillic script .

There are the following sub-standards:

KOI8-R for Russian and Bulgarian .
KOI8-U and KOI8-RU for Ukrainian , Belarusian and Russian.
KOI8-T for Tajik .
KOI8-CS for Czech and Slovak .
KOI8-O for old Russian .

There is also the 7-bit character set KOI7 .

Alternatives to KOI8 are Windows-1251 , ISO 8859-5 and, increasingly, Unicode .
