The "Si" class of the Dutch shipping company Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) was a class of ships consisting of six general cargo ships .
history
In 1947 the liner services between Holland and the colonies of the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij and the Java-China-Paketvaart Lijnen (JCJL) were merged and the majority of the KPM ships from the JCJL, from January 1, 1948 as Koninklijke Java-China-Paketvaart Lijnen ( KJCPL), continued to operate. At the time the lines were merged, ships were still under construction or on order for KPM.
construction
The six series of Si ships was built between 1948 and 1950 by the C. van der Giessen & Zonen shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel . In February 1949, the shipping company was able to take over the type ship Sinabang from the shipyard. The last ship of the Sixtett, the Sibigo , was delivered exactly one year later in February 1950. The Sinabang and Siberoet were removed before the KPM merged with the KJCJL. The Sigli and Silindoeng were chartered by the KJCJL and manned by KJCPL officers. The Siaoe and Sibigo continued to operate under the KPM flag after the merger.
commitment
The ships were used from Europe on the long-distance routes to East Asia, Australia, East and South Africa. The main cargo consisted of general cargo of all kinds, partially refrigerated cargoes, individual heavy cargo cargoes were also taken over and significant numbers of passengers were carried. On January 1, 1967, KPM and the subsidiaries Hollandse Vrachtvaart Maatschappij (HVM) and Nederlandse Tanken Paketvaart Maatschappij (NTPM) also formally merged with KJCPL. The ships were sold soon after the merger.
Later career
In 1967/68 four of the ships were sold to the Singaporean shipping company Pacific International Lines , which they also used in the liner service. The other two ships went to the Tunas shipping company of Chinese-born Singapore's Tong Djoe in 1968 and 1969. The ships remained in service until the late 1970s and early 1980s and were then sold for scrapping.
technology
The six units were designed as a three-island ship with large deck superstructures arranged amidships and conventional cargo booms and equipped with refrigerated holds for taking over refrigerated cargo . The drive was Sulzer five-cylinder two-stroke diesel engines with an output of 1300 hp, which were delivered under license from De Schelde and Werkspoor .
