The graves KV50, KV51 and KV52 ( Kings' Valley no. 50-52 ) are ancient Egyptian animal graves with the numbers 50 to 52 in the Valley of the Kings , which are dated to the 18th dynasty . The graves were discovered in the 1905–1906 excavation season by Edward R. Ayrton , who dug for Theodore M. Davis . The results of the excavation work were published in 1908 by Ayrton for Davis.

Graves

All three graves are so-called animal graves, i.e. resting places that only contained animal burials. This means that the Valley of the Kings was apparently not only used for the burials of kings, their preferred officials or family members, but was also the final resting place of the king's pets. All animal graves are located near KV35 , the grave of Amenhotep II , from which it was concluded that this "animal cemetery" belongs to his grave. However, this has not yet been confirmed. All three graves were robbed in antiquity and are now inaccessible and filled with rubble.

KV50

KV50 consists of a descending corridor and a chamber. The grave is undecorated and, in addition to burial utensils, contained two animal mummies : a dog and a monkey.

KV51

Like KV50, KV51 also has a corridor that ends in a chamber. This grave also has no decoration and apart from funeral utensils, mummy bandages and pieces of jewelry contained the highest number of animal mummies: three monkeys, a baboon, three ducks and an ibis . Ayrton hid here a canopic jar nverpackungsmaske. KV51 stood out not only in the number of animal burials compared to the other two graves, but also in another peculiarity, as Joseph Lindon Smith reported:

"The most bizarre showpiece in KV51 was a perfectly preserved, large and completely unwrapped monkey who wore a collar made of small blue gemstones."

KV52

KV52 also consists of a small corridor and a single chamber and, like KV50 and KV51, is undecorated. In addition to an animal mummy, a monkey, it also contained funeral utensils, including mummy bandages.

State of the animal mummies

Apparently the animal mummies were embalmed and wrapped like human corpses . Jewelry additions were found on some specimens. Furthermore, most of the animal mummies were also coffin.
