The KX gallery . Kunst auf Kampnagel was an artist-run exhibition space in Hamburg that existed from 1987 to 2008.

history

The non-profit showroom KX. At the time of its existence, art on Kampnagel was one of the largest art exhibitions in Hamburg operated by artists for other artists.

The space

It was located in the administration building of the former Kampnagel crane factory in Hamburg-Winterhude for 15 years and, as a white cube, offered around 440 m² of exhibition space. In 1987, KX. founded, directly following the "Free Association of Visual Artists". The political objective was to permanently install the fine arts on the Kampnagel site, which was still "occupied" at the time, alongside the various independent theater groups, by organizing regular contemporary exhibitions at the same location. Founding members were the artists Peter Afken, Jürgen Brockmann, Siegfried Fuhrmann , Jens-Roland Hasche, Michael Keesmeyer, Milly Keyser, Jochen Kuhn , Ralf Jurszo , Ralf-Rainer Odenwald , Harald Preuße, Peter Reitberger, Günter Westphal, plus Maren Fuhrmann as Accounting member.

Surname

The name KX. means: K for Kampnagel, X for the new and unknown in contemporary art, as a “necessary nail” for the presence of art. X was also used as the name for the 10th room of the "International Kampnagel Culture Factory", which was being established. The KX group, which consists mainly of artists. legitimized itself as a (non-profit recognized) association and was responsible for the program of its exhibitions in a democratic vote. The structure and organization of KX. was worn by over 70 artists over the entire period of its existence. More than 200 events were organized. An average of 10 exhibitions were organized each year. Most of the exhibition projects were supervised by self-curators, and a few by invited curators.

program

A diversified program was sought. Members of the association came again and again from very different artistic fields. B. from new music , film, reading, sculpture, painting, multimedia, room installation, performance. Interested artists could apply directly to the association with exhibition projects, for whose organization 1 to 2 association members then made themselves available as contact persons. In addition to the premises, the artists were offered the administrative infrastructure including the invitation card and press work by contract. On the occasion of the vernissages, often coupled with speeches or acoustic performances, there was always an open bar and a creative buffet as a communication point.

Cabinet for drawing

From 1994 to 1996, initiated by KX.-member Jens Asthoff, a separate “drawing room” was operated in addition to the major exhibitions.

financing

KX was financed. on the basis of project descriptions through regular funding through the cultural authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In addition, through additional funding (art fund, companies, patrons), but ultimately also through the unpaid work of the association members. The exhibition program primarily took into account “young” artists, special positions or groups of artists, as well as individuals whose works were rarely shown and were unusual in their peculiarity.

Relocation to the City Nord

In 2002, KX. Finally, no longer use his rooms there on Kampnagel, because due to rent increases, rededication, demolition, downsizing, and a reorganization of the whole of Kampnagel, a different structure resulted - to the detriment of the visual arts compared to the theater. The large hall K3 as a space for art was also given over to the theater for administrative purposes.

While looking for new rooms, KX. then its continuation in Hamburg's City Nord on “level +14”, thanks to a patron who provided space for the following years. KX. worked there under the chairmanship of Wolfgang Schindler, Uwe Ochsler and Stefan Canham in the tried and tested way as at Kampnagel, but now with a different space on 350 m². Due to a significant cut in funding by the Hanseatic city in favor of additional exhibition rooms that have now been established in Hamburg and a complete change in ownership, the operating artists decided in March 2008 to choose KX. close.
