Cabinet Cavour II
The Cavour II cabinet ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont from May 4, 1855 to July 19, 1859. The government of the Conservative Prime Minister Camillo Benso von Cavour was based, like the previous Cavour I cabinet , on a larger parliamentary coalition (Connubio ) , which also included the progressive Democrats. The first two governments of Cavour prepared Sardinia-Piedmont between 1852 and 1859 for a confrontation with the Austrian Empire , which ruled large parts of Italy and thus opposed unification of the country. In the second war of independence Cavour resigned in 1859 in protest against the preliminary peace of Villafranca . This was followed by the La Marmora I cabinet .
