Cabinet D'Azeglio II
The Cabinet D'Azeglio II ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont from May 21 to November 4, 1852. Prime Minister Massimo d'Azeglio had resigned with his first cabinet because his conservative party colleague and Minister Camillo Benso von Cavour had chosen the opposition politician Urbano Rattazzi as President of the Chamber of Deputies had supported and, in addition, an expanded political alliance between Cavour and Rattazzi emerged (Connubio) . Cavour was therefore excluded from the second D'Azeglio cabinet.
D'Azeglio resigned because of the ongoing conflict over the separation between church and state , in particular because of King Victor Emmanuel II's refusal to sign a law passed by parliament introducing civil marriage . Pope Pius IX had urged Victor Emmanuel II. This was followed by the Cavour I Cabinet , which was able to rely in Parliament on the expanded coalition forged by Cavour.
