Cabinet Thabane II

The Thabane II cabinet was the cabinet in office in Lesotho from 2017 to 2020 . It was formed by Thomas Thabane ( All Basotho Convention , ABC), who was sworn in as Prime Minister for the second time after the 2017 elections after a two-year hiatus . The cabinet was sworn in on June 23, 2017 and partly on July 14, 2017 and consisted of 27 ministers from four parties. There were also eight deputy ministers in the cabinet . Monyane Moleleki ( Alliance of Democrats , AD) became vice-president . The cabinet replaced the Mosisili IV cabinet . On May 19, 2020, the cabinet was dissolved with the resignation of Thabane and replaced by the Majoro cabinet .

On July 14, 2017, the cabinet consisted of the following 27 ministers, including five women, as well as Thabane and Moleleki. The respective party affiliation is also given. Tlohelang Aumane was a member of the opposition Democratic Congress at the time of his appointment , but stated that he wanted to convert to the AD.

Transformations on February 15, 2018

Several ministers switched portfolios: 'Maseribane and Joang Molapo (both BNP) and Maliehe and Motsie (both ABC). Lehlohonolo Moramotse (ABC) was replaced by Maliehe Prince Maliehe (ABC, m), Nyapane Kaya (ABC) by Nkaku Kabi (ABC, m). Mokhele Moletsane became Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Correctional Services , while Mahali Phamotse took over the vacant Ministry of Gender, Youth and Sports . Ntoi Rapapa - the brother of Samuel Rapapa (ABC) - became Minister of Education and Training (all AD). In addition, the National Secret Service was directly subordinate to the Minister in the Prime Minister's Office .

Dismissal and resignations in August / September 2018

Motlohi Maliehe was fired on August 14, 2018 for criticizing Thabane and his wife. The ministerial post remained vacant for a long time.

'Mamotsie Motsie resigned on August 25, 2018 for health reasons. Defense Minister Sentje Lebona resigned for personal reasons on September 14th, 'Mampho Mokhele was henceforth provisionally responsible for his department. Eventually it was occupied by Tefo Mapesela.

Transformations in February 2019

In February 2019, the following ministers exchanged portfolios by order of Thabane: Semano Sekatle (ABC since December 2018) and Joang Molapo as well as Tsukutlane Au and Mokoto Hloaele.

On February 18, 2019, Thabane dismissed ministers Lebohang Hlaele - his son-in-law - and 'Matebatso Doti, because they had been elected to the National Executive Committee of the ABC against his will by the anti-Thabane wing .

Transformations in October 2019

On October 8, 2019, Lehlohonolo Moramotse returned to the cabinet as Minister of Police and Public Safety and Motlohi Maliehe (both ABC) as Minister for Social Development .

Layoffs in April 2020

On April 3, 2020, Thabane dismissed the ministers Mapesela and Sello, who, together with other politicians , had spoken out in favor of a vote of no confidence in Thabane. Thabane himself took over the office of Minister of Defense and National Security .
