Moeketsi Majoro (born November 3, 1961 in Tsikoane , Basutoland ) is a politician from Lesotho ( All Basotho Convention , ABC). He has been Prime Minister of his country since 2020. From 2017 to 2020 he was Minister of Finance.

Life

Majoro was born in the Leribe district. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the National University of Lesotho (NUL), a Master of Arts in Agricultural Economics (such as: " Agricultural Economics ") from Washington State University, and was eventually graduated from the same university in Natural Resource Economics (such as: “Resource Economics”).

From 1991 to 2000 he worked as a lecturer for economics at the NUL. He then worked as a tax analyst for four years. In November 2003 he was appointed Principal Secretary in the Lesotho Ministry of Finance, four years later he became Deputy Executive Director and in 2010 Executive Director of the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund . In 2013 he received the position of Minister for Development Planning in the Thabane I cabinet , which he lost again after the change of power in 2015 . After Thabane won the 2017 election again, Majoro became Minister of Finance in Thabane II's cabinet .

On March 22, 2020, Majoro was elected as Thabane's successor candidate by the ABC parliamentary group in the National Assembly with 26 out of 51 votes. The Democratic Congress , which was previously in opposition, and the coalition partner of the ABC Basotho National Party have confirmed their participation in a coalition under Majoro. Thabane had previously closed parliament several times to prevent a vote of no confidence . In addition to large parts of the ABC and the DC, other parties had announced that they wanted to form a government under Majoro. On May 18, he received from King Letsie III. the power to serve as prime minister. He finally took office on May 20.

On May 21, the Majoro Cabinet was sworn in. Majoro's deputy was Mathibeli Mokhothu (DC). The cabinet includes ABC and DC politicians as well as the chairmen of four other parties that supported the change in power.

Majoro is married and has two children.
