Elias Phisoana Ramaema
Elias Phisoana Ramaema (born November 10, 1933 in Mapoteng , Basutoland , † December 11, 2015 in Maseru ) was a military and politician in Lesotho .
Life
Ramaema was born in what is now the Berea District . From 1957 to 1958 he worked as a migrant worker in a gold mine in Welkom, South Africa . On his return he became a member of the Basutoland Mounted Police, then with the Lesotho Paramilitary Force , where he rose quickly. He was involved as a colonel in the overthrow of the government of Leabua Jonathan on January 20, 1986 and became a member of the six-member military junta led by Justin Metsing Lekhanya . In 1991 he overthrew Lekhanya and took over the government of Lesotho on May 2nd with the rank of major general . In 1992 he allowed the former King Moshoeshoe II to return to Lesotho from his exile. However, his son, Letsie III. , for the time being king. Ramaema initiated the democratization of the country. So he got Order No. 4 , which prohibited political activity. The elections to the National Assembly in March 1993 were the first free elections in 23 years. Ramaema remained in office until April 2, 1993. His successor as head of government was Ntsu Mokhehle from the Basutoland Congress Party . From then on Ramaema worked as an entrepreneur. In 2002 he was elected to the Senate .
