As Hematemesis is vomiting of blood , respectively. Vomiting blood due to a fresh bleeding in the esophagus or upper stomach area occur - eg. B. with esophageal varices or a bleeding gastric ulcer , less often with gastric cancer - and in these cases it is bright red ( hemoglobin ), whereby one must also consider lung bleeding , in which the blood is usually darker and possibly frothy.
One speaks of “breaking coffee grounds” when hematin, which is brown in color, is formed from the hemoglobin through the action of stomach acid .
