Kafr ad-Dawwar ( Arabic كفر الدوار, DMG Kafr ad-Dawwār ) is a city in the governorate al-Buhaira with approx. 112,000 inhabitants. It forms an industrial city near Alexandria. The Mahmudiyya Canal runs north through Kafr ad-Dawwar to Alexandria. It branches off west of the Nile and is the main source of drinking water and irrigation.

history

This is where the famous battle for Kafr ad-Dawwar took place between the Egyptian army under Ahmed Urabi Pasha and the British army during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 . Urabi was able to prevent British forces from advancing into Cairo for five weeks . The British forces eventually changed their strategy and moved on the Suez to get to Cairo via Tel El Kebir.

In September 1984 protests broke out in the city against the plans of the then dictator Hosni Mubarak to raise food prices in times of falling wages. Thousands of demonstrators threw stones and occupied markets and streets. In response, security forces used force, killing three people at a factory and injuring dozen others.
