His performance in competitions of the NPC was crowned with only moderate success. His goal was to win the Team Universe to achieve professional status at the Amateur World Championships of the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB). After two failed attempts, he managed to qualify for it in 1999. The competition took place in Bratislava , Slovakia . He only took 4th place and thus missed the desired professional title. This time he was able to win it and thus qualify as a professional recognized by the IFBB for further competitions. Since then, his greatest successes have been the three victories at the Arnold Classic in 2009, 2010 and 2016, as well as second place at the Mr. Olympia in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

He gained international fame mainly because of his direct rivalry with Phil Heath . Greene is also popular because of its regular presence and fan proximity on social networks.

In 2015, he unexpectedly canceled his participation in the Mr. Olympia election . Half a year later, Greene returned with his third victory in the Arnold Classic 2016. In the following weeks he was able to repeat his success at the Arnolds Classic Australia and Arnold Classic Brazil .
