Kaia Iva (born April 28, 1964 in Türi , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . From 2016 to 2019 she was Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Estonia. She belonged to the conservative Isamaa party from 1999 to 2019.

Life

Kaia Iva graduated from school in Nõo in 1981 . Until 1986 she studied mathematics and physics at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute (now Tallinn University ) . She then worked as a teacher in Türi before switching to the private sector.

In 1999 Iva joined the Isamaaliit party , which later became Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (from 2018 Isamaa ). From 2002 to 2005 she was Lord Mayor of the city of Türi. From 2005 to 2007 she was a member of the Türi City Council.

From 2007 to 2015 Kaia Iva was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) and from 2011 to 2015 the chairwoman of the Isamaa parliamentary group . In the 2015 general election , she missed re-entry into the Riigikogu . She then worked as the director of a kindergarten in her hometown of Türi. From November 23, 2016, Kaia Iva was Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Estonia in the coalition government under Prime Minister Jüri Ratas . In 2017 she ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Isamaa party leadership . She was a member of the government until it was replaced by the Ratas II cabinet on April 29, 2019.

In January 2020, it became known that she left Isamaa at the end of 2019 because, among other things, she did not approve of the pension reform supported by the party. As a non-party, she planned to concentrate on local politics in Türi in the future.

Private

Kaia Iva is married. She has three children.
