Golden frog (Anomaloglossus beebei) in Kaieteur National Park

Kaieteur National Park is a national park in the Potaro-Siparuni region of Guyana . The park was established in 1929 by the Kaieteur National Park Act and is the only national park in Guyana. Its centerpiece is Kaieteur Falls in the Guianan moist forest ecoregion . C. Barrington Brown , a British geologist , discovered the falls in 1870.

geography

The park is located on the south-western border of the country and in the Potaro-Siparuni region in the northwest. The western border is now also the national border with Brazil, where the Roraima-Tepui rises about 60 km further west of the waterfalls in the national park named after him. The area of the park belongs to the catchment area of the Essequibo , whose tributaries Potaro River and Korume Creek and many others arise in the park area. The original borders from 1929 ran around Kaieteur Falls and the gorge of the Potaro River. The Kaieteur International Airport near the falls offers convenient access for tourists, but access is also possible by land and by boat from Tumatumari .

Flora and fauna

The rainforest with its extraordinarily high biodiversity is an important retreat for numerous rare animal and plant species. The golden frog (Anomaloglossus beebei), which lives in certain bromeliads , and the lowland rock cock (Rupicola rupicola) are particularly well known . At the waterfalls, the swallows are noticeable, some of which have their nests on the rocks behind the water jet. One of the largest predators is the ocelot .

tourism

The Kaieteur National Park Commission maintains the Tukeit Rest House Compound and various hiking trails that lead along the rivers to the falls, as well as Tukeit Falls .

It was not until 1999 that the park area was enlarged to 630 km² by order of the President (Presidential Order).
