history
The monument was created by the Berlin sculptor Johannes Pfuhl and unveiled on May 18, 1893 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II . The figures of Otto von Bismarck and Helmuth von Moltke stood on both sides of the equestrian statue . The east side had the coat of arms of Upper Lusatia and that of the city of Görlitz with the inscription:
“The loyal and grateful Upper Lusatia to the unifier of Germany. 1893. "
On May 11, 1939, the memorial was moved from Obermarkt to Wilhelmsplatz . During the Second World War, the bronze equestrian statue, like many others, was melted down for war purposes in 1942 as part of the “ Metal donation of the German people ” campaign.
