The Kaiserin Augusta Bay ( English Empress Augusta Bay ) is a large sea bay in front of the Torokina district of the island of Bougainville , in Papua New Guinea .
The bay was named Kaiserin-Augusta-Bucht after Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , the wife of Kaiser Wilhelm I , at the time the island Bougainville belonged to the German colony German New Guinea and kept this name in anglicised form.
On November 1 and 2, 1943, the naval battle of the Empress Augusta Bay took place at the Empress Augusta Bay between the Japanese army and US troops .
The Jaba River flows into the bay with a delta. In the Jaba opens above the Kawerong River, in the solid waste and of the ore residues from 1972 to 1989 operated Panguna were initiated (copper).
