The Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Brücke , also Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Kettenbrücke , was a chain bridge over the Elbe in northern Bohemia . The bridge connected the town of Tetschen (Děčín) on the eastern bank of the Elbe with the Bodenbach on the left .

Technical specifications

The bridge was 235 meters long and 8.5 meters wide. It was made by the Schertz company from Pirna according to plans by engineer Werner, who changed the original project by Josef Schnirch (1802–1877), brother of the bridge builder Friedrich Schnirch .

history

The bridge was built in 1855 and was considered one of the most beautiful and largest bridges in Bohemia. It was named after Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary , who became Empress of Austria in 1854. According to legend, the bridge was inaugurated the moment she crossed it to go to Vienna, where she married Emperor Franz-Josef in 1854. The bridge was the only chain bridge of the existing bridges over the Elbe.

On July 8, 1915, a fire broke out on the bridge, which largely destroyed the wooden planks of the suspension bridge between the stone pillars on both banks of the Elbe. From then on, the bridge could no longer be used, which had a very negative effect on the traffic situation in Tetschen and Bodenbach. The reconstruction took a few months.

On July 1, 1917, the Austrian state took over the Chain Bridge from the city of Tetschen and undertook to indemnify the shareholders of the Kettenbrücken Aktiengesellschaft, which had financed the construction, reconstruction and structural maintenance of the bridge, harmless. At the same time, the state took over the entire money fund of this joint-stock company in the amount of 147,000 crowns in order to be able to gradually draw the shares. However, there was only one draw on January 1, 1918. With the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the formation of Czechoslovakia , the state had to solve other problems.

In 1919 the Ministry of Public Works of the Czechoslovak State approved the repair of the wooden bridge railway Kč 38,000 and increased the amount in the spring of 1920 to Kč 50,915.26. In 1921, further urgent repairs to the wooden bridge railway were approved. This time the sum was Kč 65,000. Repairs became necessary again in the following year, and the sums of money required for them grew steadily. At that time it was Kč 80,000. In the following years, the costs for the renovation of the increasingly heavily used wooden bridge railway increased more and more. Due to this cost explosion and the fact that the chain bridge was no longer able to cope with modern requirements, it was demolished at the beginning of the 1930s. The current Tyrš Bridge (Tyršův most) was built on the two side pillars in 1933 , named after Miroslav Tyrš (1832–1884), the co-founder of the Czech gymnastics movement Sokol from Tetschen .

The Empress Elisabeth Bridge was very similar to the Chain Bridge in Budapest.
