Kalavria ( Greek Καλαυρία ( f. Sg. )) Forms the northern part of the Saronic Gulf, situated island of Poros . With around 22 km², Kalavria includes by far the largest part of the almost 23 km² island. In the south, an isthmus of about 150 m connects to the smaller island part of Sferia (Σφαιρία ( f. Sg. )), Which is of volcanic origin. The highest point is the Vigla (Βίγλα) with 378 m in the east, in the middle of the island the Profitis Ilias with 314 m.

The scanty remains of a Poseidon sanctuary known in antiquity can be found on Kalavria . The Temple of Poseidon in Kalavria was once the center of an Ionic amphictyony of seven sea cities and later an asylum that was respected even by the Macedonians. 322 BC Demosthenes fled there and took his own life to avoid imminent arrest.

Kalavria has split tectonically from the Peloponnese and the strait in between belongs to the tectonically active rift of Epidaurus . Other volcanic areas in the region are Methana , Aegina and Krommyonia .
