The Kaldbakur is a volcanic mountain in the northeast of Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Grýtubakki north of the main town Grenivík . The summit is always covered with snow.

geography

The mountain Kaldbakur rises a few kilometers north of the village Grenivík on Eyjafjörður around 50 km north of Akureyri and lies in the west of the Flateyjarskagi peninsula . The mountain rises directly from the sea to a height of 1167 m.

geology

The mountains surrounding the Eyjafjörður fjord consist of 6-10 million year old flood basalts and the remains of two central volcanoes , one of which is Kaldbakur. They are the origin of the huge lava fields.

Settlement of the area

At the foot of the mountain lies the village of Grenivík by the fjord. Látraström , the stretch of coastline leading north to the open North Sea on the east side of Eyjafjörður at the foot of the mountain, was once inhabited. The inhabitants lived from agriculture, hunting and fishing. Some of the ruins of the houses can still be seen.

Hiking on Kaldbakur

Guided tours up the mountain are offered from the village of Grenivík , some of which are carried out on skis.
