The Flateyjarskagi peninsula is located in northern Iceland . The village of Grýtubakki is located on it .
Surname
Although it is a large peninsula, it did not have a uniform name of its own until recently. There were e.g. B. with locals the names Gjögraskagi and Flateyjardalsskagi or Víkur og Firðir . It was not until April 2011 that an agreement was reached in the Örnefnanefnd (German committee for proper names ) on the proposal of Hjörleifur Guttormsson on the name Flateyjarskagi, which from now on will also be entered in the cards.
location
The mountainous peninsula is located between the Eyjafjörður fjord and the Skjálfandi bay .
Geology and geography
The peninsula consists of three mountain ranges over 1000 m high, one of which is the Kaldbakur in the westernmost chain . Between these mountain ranges there are high valleys as in the case of the Leirdalsheiði and the Flateyjardalsheiði , which merges into the inhabited Fnjóskadalur in its southern part . The easternmost mountain range is called Kinnarfjöll , its northern foothills Víknafjöll .
The peninsula measures approx. 25 km in length (NS) and just as much in width (WO).
Settlement
At the beginning of the 21st century, Flateyjarskagi is only populated in the southern part, apart from Grenivík , while the farms in the northern part are all deserted. In earlier times there were courtyards z. B. on Látraströnd , the coast of northeast Eyjafjörður, in Flateyjardalur and in the district of Fjörður ( Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla ).
