Kaleidos Game is a board game in 1995. It was invented by Spartaco Albertarelli and Editrice Giochi published (eg games). It was on the shortlist for the game of the year 1995, won the French As d'Or for best party game in 1996 .

The new edition, published by Cocktail Games / Ystari in 2008 , was nominated for the As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année 2009 , won the German Educational Game Award in 2009 and the Norwegian Årets Spill as best parlor game in 2010 .

There was also a multilingual version of Kaleidos for the global market. Apart from the instructions in several languages, there is an additional letter for each letter on the letter wheel so that you can choose one of the two. Albertarelli explained that in different languages it would sometimes be unfavorable to have given a certain letter. While it is the X or Y in German-speaking countries, in England it is, for example, the K. There is a slight connection with town, country, river .

Furnishing

Kaleidos consists of the following, rather unusual components:

  • 4 × 6 picture panels printed on both sides in 4 colors
  • 4 board holders
  • 1 letter wheel
  • 4 pencils
  • 1 billing block
  • 1 notepad
  • 1 hourglass
  • 1 set of instructions

content

Kaleidos is about finding as many terms as possible within the given time with a given letter, which is determined using the letter wheel. Each player also has pictures from 1 to 12 showing the strangest things. For example, one picture shows a workshop with a motorcycle in the middle with a koala hanging from it. Right next to it there is a safe on the floor in which there is an aquarium with fish and a handheld vacuum cleaner. There is a trumpet on the safe and a monkey sits behind it. A violin is leaning against the motorcycle and a parrot is flying over it. All over the floor you can find a cat, a wind-up mouse, a car battery, a baby with a helmet, two French playing cards, a compressor, a model train, etc. The pictures in Kaleidos are partly logical, but on the other hand they make no sense.

photos

The individual pictures of Kaleidos contain vast amounts of objects and, also according to the rules of the game, allow a wide range of interpretations. So z. B. a certain fabric can be classified as nylon or cotton. A brand of car can be called a jeep, a convertible, etc.

Point system

Until the hourglass runs out, you have time to find as many objects as possible. Each written word counts, if valid, 5 points. If another player has the same word, this only counts for 1 point for both (or more). At the end of 12 rounds, all points are added up. The player with the most points wins.

continuation

In 1997 a sequel, Kaleidos Junior , also from eg-Spiele, was released. This version for children from 7, has simpler pictures and a more easily understandable set of rules.

New edition

The production of kaleidos by Editrice Giochi was stopped in 2005 after 10 years and the rights were returned to Spartaco Albertarelli. He then founded Kaleidosgames (KG-Studios) with Marianna Fulvi, Elena Prette and Angelo Zucca in 2006 , which developed a new version with illustrations by Marianna Fulvi and Elena Prette, which were published in a co-production by Cocktail Games / Interlude and Ystari in 2008.

A new feature is the "drawing" of a letter using individual playing cards. The well-known letter wheel will no longer be a component, but can be used as an alternative to the predecessor. The picture panels printed on both sides were reduced from 6 to 5, i.e. 10 different motifs. The point system has also been changed slightly: Instead of 5 points for a single word, this time it is 3.

Word origin

Kaleidos comes from the ancient Greek kalòs + eidos (beautiful pictures).
