The Kalevi spordihall (in German sports hall Kalev ) is a multifunctional hall in the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Juhkentali district .

history

The Kalevi spordihall is named after Kalev , a legendary hero of Estonian mythology . It was inaugurated on November 24, 1962. Its main architects were Peeter Tarvas and Uno Tölpus .

There is a modernist mural in the socialist style above the main entrance. On the left it shows a dancer of rhythmic gymnastics with a stick and ribbon . There are three figures on the right. The work of art was created by Valli Lember-Bogatkina and Margareta Fuks .

In the first month after the opening, the ice ballet of the Soviet Union performed in the Kalevi spordihall for four weeks . The ice cream revue was a sensation in the then Estonian SSR . The ticket sales brought back almost the entire nominal construction cost of 400,000 rubles .

In the 1960s, the sports hall had the largest event hall in Tallinn. Therefore, not only sporting events, but also dance tournaments, fashion shows and entertainment programs were held there. In May 1967 the hall was the scene of the legendary international jazz festival in the Estonian capital.

Sports hall today

Today, basketball games and athletics events are mainly held in the multifunctional hall . In addition, there will find tennis tournaments , volleyball - and football matches , futsal events Select, boxing matches , Ringer's competitions and Asian martial arts instead. The large hall offers space for 1,000 seats.

The hall was extensively renovated in 2011. The city of Tallinn has owned the sports hall since autumn 2010.
