The Horst lime kilns in the Eisborn district of Balver are an industrial monument from the early stages of the lime industry in the Hönnetal .

history

The first two lime kilns on the grounds of the Horst lime works, at that time a lime shaft kiln by Friedrich Thiemann from Balve in der Horst , were built in 1929, the third was built the following year. The ovens were in operation until the 1960s.

At that time, the lime works was connected to the rail network via today's Hönnetalbahn . At the Binolen train station there is still the siding and concrete scaffolding of the lime loading point.

The restored Horst lime kilns were listed as a historical monument in 1984.

Limestone is still quarried in the adjacent quarry and processed in the Hönnetal lime works, among other places .

description

The two round ovens built first are made of quarry stone masonry, the third of cement-concrete blocks. They are each 13 meters high and connected to one another. The diameter of each furnace is eight meters in the lower area and six meters in the upper area. The actual combustion chambers are ten meters high and three meters in diameter. The furnace platform, from which the ovens are filled, can be reached via a two-flight wooden staircase. In the beginning there was also a shelter on the stage to protect the workers.

The quarry stone masonry or the cement concrete blocks have a thickness of 100 to 180 centimeters in the outer area. Inward, the permanent lining follows with a 24 centimeter thick brick layer, a ten centimeter thick expansion joint filled with sand and again a brick layer 12 centimeters thick. The last layer is a 24 centimeter thick masonry made of refractory firebricks .
