The Kallenturm from the west side (originally city inside)

The Kallenturm in Rheinbach is one of the former seven towers of the medieval city fortifications. Today it is located in the city center (address: Kallenturm 8 ) on the corner of Löherstrasse and Grabenstrasse . The Rheinbach city wall , which was laid down in 1820, had, in addition to the rectangular Kallenturm, two round full towers (both also preserved: Hexenturm and Wasemer Turm ) and four semicircular towers that were demolished in the meantime.

history

The rectangular tower was probably built in the late 13th century. Outstanding from the city wall at that time, it has been known as the Kallenturm since 1604 , before (at least since 1501) it was called the Pfaffenturm ("Paffen thorn") - perhaps due to its location on the Fronhof of the Prüm Abbey . The tower secured the passage of the Mühlenbach through the city wall, which the later name indicates: Kalle, an expression for a water channel . In addition to its defensive function, the Kallenturm was also used as a prison and for residential purposes.

Originally, the quarry stone tower had a cellar with a high ground floor, a covered upper floor and an uncovered and parapet , further floor. On the first floor, loopholes in the form of key notches (appearance of inverted keyholes) were walled in, and access was via an outside staircase. Around the turn of the 17th century, the top floor was expanded and a hipped roof was put on . This projectile received slit-like loopholes. In 1852 a fourth (brick) storey was added, and the tower was expanded to include an annex, also made of bricks, to give it its current floor plan. From around the time until the end of the Second World War , the tower was used as a police station, with some rooms in the tower also being used as prison cells. Since 1969 the operating association of the Rheinbacher St. Georgspfadfinder ( Georgsring eV ) has leased the tower as the organization's home. Significant restoration work was carried out on the building in 1970 and 2009/2010.

The Kallenturm is a listed building.
