Kalmunai ( Tamil : கல்முனை , Sinhala : කල්මුනේ ) is a city in the Ampara District , Sri Lanka . The population is 106,780 (as of 2011).

geography

The eastern side of Kalmunai lies on the Indian Ocean . To the north is the village of Periyaneelavanai and to the south is the village of Karaitivu . Karaitivu is considered a suburb of the city. Kalmunai consists of four main districts: Kalmunai City (from Thalavatuvan Junction to Zahira College Road), Kalmunai North (Pandiruppu, Maruthamunai and Neelavanai), Kalmunai South (Sainthamaruthu) and Kamunai West (Natpittimunai, Savalakkadai).

The main population groups are Sri Lankan Muslims ( Moors ), Sri Lankan Tamils , Sinhalese and Burgher .

history

In the 17th century, Muslims from Colombo were driven out by the Portuguese . The Muslims fled to Kandy to seek asylum with the King of Kandy (Rajasinghe ii). The king relocated the refugees to Kalmunai (8000) and Kattankady (4000). Because of this settlement policy, this became an area with a Muslim majority.

Civil war

The civil war in Sri Lanka between 1983 and 2009 had a lasting impact on the area. A wide variety of disappearances and social unrest affected the Kalmanai population.

2004 tsunami

The 2004 tsunami resulted in a large number of deaths in Kalmunai and damage to property amounting to several million rupees .

Others

Since 2005, the city of Nuremberg has been sponsored due to the tsunami in 2004.
