Calvary with stations of the cross and chapel

The Hollenstein an der Ybbs calvary is located in the municipality of Hollenstein an der Ybbs in the Amstetten district in Lower Austria . The Kalvarienberg is under monument protection ( list entry ).

location

The ten to twenty meter high Kalvarienberg is about 150 meters south of the village center. To the northeast of Kalvarienberg is the parish church of Hollenstein an der Ybbs . The top of the Kalvarienberg hill is flattened to a plateau and carries the Kalvarienberg chapel.

Way of the Cross

The eleven first stations of the cross are along a path that begins on the east side of the hill and flows slightly uphill on its south and west side on the north side of the plateau. The bricked station houses are all on the mountain side. They contain oil paintings on sheet iron, copies by the painter and graphic artist Josef Führich . The altarpiece of the Kalvarienbergkapelle represents the twelfth station of the cross "Jesus is lifted up and dies on the cross". The last two stations are up south of the Kalvarienbergkapelle. They are much larger than the first eleven stations and contain groups of figures that may have previously been in the Gaming Charterhouse . The carvings are likely from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century.

Calvary Chapel

The chapel is a simple baroque building which , like the stations of the cross, was completed after two years of construction in 1759. Under Joseph II , the chapel was profaned , but in 1848 it was repaired for church services. During a renovation in 1853, it was given a turret that could accommodate two bells. At the time of the First World War , a bell was lost; in 1997 it was replaced by a new one. Today the Kalvarienbergkapelle also serves as a funeral hall .
