Kamiel Festraets , actually Julien Louis Camille Festraets (born February 17, 1904 in Sint-Truiden , † 1974 ) was a Flemish watchmaker .

Life

Festraets was the son of a watchmaker and worked in his parents' business from an early age. In addition, he also studied mathematics and mechanics. He constructed various salon clocks with astronomical displays and won a gold medal with his first model at the 1935 World Exhibition in Brussels .

His greatest achievement, however, was the construction of the astronomical clock in Saint-Truiden. Festraets worked from 1937 to 1942 alone on the clockwork, a construction over 6 meters high and weighing around 4000 kg with various automatons and astronomical indications. Later three more parts were created, the ship with a tide display for 12 world ports, a Foucault pendulum and a display of the annual earth movement around the sun. All four parts of the clock were moved to the Festraetsstudio in the Beguinage of Saint-Truiden in 1968 . Installation alone took two months.

Festraets also took care of the continued existence of the watchmaker's guild in Saint-Truiden. He trained several watchmaker apprentices in his studio and founded a school in Leuven .
